Is Hyperthermia Beneficial In Fighting Breast Cancer?

by Fiona Baron

One of the pioneer doctors working in the field of hyperthermia is James Bicher, M.D.. He is the founder of Valley Cancer Institute and has been its director for 26 years. Patients from around the world have been treated successfully at VCI. The combination of hyperthermia and low dose radiation is an effective cancer that has little or no side effects.

Dr. Bicher heats the tumor to approximately 104 degrees Fahrenheit using the localized Hyperthermia machines, with no pain to the patient. The blood is oxygenated by the heat, which also increases circulation; this, in turn, increases oxygenation of the cancer cells. The cells have increased sensitivity to radiation when oxygen is present, which makes them vulnerable and susceptible to being destroyed. The combination of heat and low dose pinpointed radiation (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) is what causes the tumor to deteriorate and disappear. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) only treats the tumor; it takes its shape, so in many cases it decreases the damage to healthy tissue.

When a woman needs to deal with breast cancer, hyperthermia benefits are invaluable. A woman does not have to disfigure her body, because mastectomy can be avoided. "Cutting" a tumor out, in most cases, does not get rid of cancer. If a woman knew that some of the benefits include being as beautiful, healthy, and womanly after the treatment as before, and she could have the least possible chance of thecancer returning, then Hyperthermia would be her choice. Chemotherapy and radiation leave a woman feeling weak and with no hair; it also exhausts her immune system as it works to fight off the cancer. These things do not happen when she has hyperthermia treatment.

Another annoying and uncomfortable side effect of radiation therapy happens to the skin in the area that is treated. The reaction is a lot like a sunburn, where the skin turns pink or red and itches, burns, is sore, and might peel.

The other most common conventional cancer treatment is chemotherapy, which uses medicine in order to weaken and destroy cancercells. This works to kill the cancer cells that are found at the original site of the cancer and the cancer cells that have moved to other places in the body.

"Chemo" is a systemic therapy; the entire body is affected as it moves through the bloodstream. The most common side effects of chemo are: fatigue, diarrhea, hair loss, anemia, memory loss, nausea, and infection.

It is the human organism itself eventually, that strengthens and fights off the cancer holistically, and that is why its chance for the cancerreturning decreases. With lower side effects and increased effectiveness, and significant pain reduction, Hyperthermia combined with low dose pinpointed radiation, gives better results while improving survival and quality of life. - 39969
