The Relationship Between Nutrition and Cancer

by Jim Duffy

The condition commonly known as cancer actually comprises over 200 different diseases, all with some traits in common. Cancer can affect virtually every part of the body, from the skin to the internal organs. The diseases known as cancer are characterized by abnormal cell division and their ability to invasively spread from one area to another. Cancer is generally named for whatever body part it originates in or the type of tissue it first infects. For instance:

- Adenocarcinomas are found in glandular tissue.

- Sarcomas are found in connective tissue.

- Adenosarcomas can be found in both gland tissues and connective tissues.

- Leukemias are cancers that affect blood cells.

- Lymphomas affect the lymph nodes.

- Around 85% of all cancers consist of solid tumors.

Reproductive cancers make up about 50% of all cases in women. These types include breast cancer or pelvic area cancers. The second most common cancer-related death for women is caused by lung cancer, but the primary cancer-related causes of death for women are breast, endometrial, and ovarian cancers. The key to overcoming them is to catch them early, so testing is important. There are also some diet choices that can reduce the risk of cancer. Even after cancer is diagnosed, diet can be helpful during treatment.

Some Common Symptoms of Cancer

These warning signs are not perfect indicators of cancer, but they are signs to watch for so you may be checked by a doctor just in case they occur:

- A notable change in bladder or bowel habits

- A sore that does not appear to be healing

- Any unusual bleeding or discharge

- A thickening or a lump anywhere on your body

- Chronic indigestion or difficulty in swallowing

- Changes in a wart or mole

- A persistent cough or an unusually hoarse voice

None of these are a definite sign of cancer, and some cancers develop without any warning at all, existing for years or even decades before detection. It is important to be tested regularly for various cancers, even if the course after detection is merely to wait and see.

Cancer Screenings

Here are some tests the American Cancer Society recommends for those without other significant risk factors. Those with an increased risk, including a family history of certain cancers, should follow the advice of a doctor.

- Men and women should both begin flexible sigmoidoscopy at age fifty, with further checks every three to five years.

- Men and women should also start a fecal occult blood test (tests for bowel cancer) starting at age fifty and repeated yearly.

- Digital rectal exams should start at age forty for everyone and be performed yearly.

- Pap tests should be done by all women who are either sexually active or over the age of eighteen. This checks the cervical cells for cancer. The intervals for these tests should be determined by the woman's doctor.

- Women eighteen to forty should have pelvic exams every one to three years, while women over forty should have one every year.

- After menopause, women should have endometrial tissue samples taken. The doctor will determine the frequency after the first time.

- Breast self-examinations should be performed once every month by women once they reach the age of eighteen. A doctor can show the correct way to perform one.

- Mammography should be performed beginning at age 50 and repeated every one or two years - more for a woman determined to be at high risk.

Food Choices That Help Prevent Cancer

The American Cancer Society recommends several foods to reduce the risk of certain cancers.

- Soy beans or dried beans contain plant estrogen, which helps prevent against some pelvic cancers and breast cancer.

- Tomatoes, carrots, and red peppers contain a healthy amount of vitamin C. They also contain carotenoids, which guard against prostate cancer.

- Greens and cruciferous vegetables are good at reducing the risk of some cancers more common in men, including esophageal, lung, rectal, stomach, and colon cancers. They may even reduce the risk of certain other cancers, such as breast, bladder, pancreas, and larynx cancers.

- Olive oil is known to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

- Milk and milk products reduce the risks of both breast and colon cancers.

- Salmon and other oily fish can help ward off cancer in general.

Other Food Combinations that Can Reduce Cancer Risk

- Ground flaxseed contains lignans, fiber, and plant-sourced omega-3s. Eat this with berries, cottage cheese, or soybeans to help ward against breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer. Just mix a few berries and tablespoon of ground flaxseed into a serving of low-fat cottage cheese.

- Stir-fry some of your favorite vegetables in a little bit of quality olive oil to better absorb nutrients and protect yourself against certain types of cancers.

- Get a good tea that you enjoy, like white, green, black, red, or herbal and some silken tofu to make a delicious dessert. After brewing the tea, let it cool to room temperature. Blend soft tofu to an extra cream consistency, and then stir a half cup to a full cup of tea into it. You can add some berries for flavor or add some raw almonds. It can be served at room temperature or chilled if you prefer a firmer texture. This has elements that may stop cancer before it even appears.

- Regular low-fat dairy products and foods with vitamin D can lower the likelihood of the appearance of colorectal cancer.

The Importance of Protein

Protein is also very helpful in combating cancer, either in preventing it or helping with treatment. The antibodies in your immune system are composed of protein, so you'll need it to keep your immune system strong. Protein also builds muscle and aids the body in renewing itself, so it will even contribute to your overall health. Profect, a liquid protein shot from Protica, is a source of protein that contains 25 grams of protein per serving. At less than three ounces per serving, you can take it wherever you need to go. Not only does it provide a shot of necessary protein, it contains all the vitamin C and 10% of the vitamins B you will need during your day.

Reasons of getting lung cancer

by Ansu Abraham

Smoking cigarette smoking is one of the main reasons of lung cancer. 90% of the cancers have been caused by use of tobacco. Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds, many of which have been shown to be cancer-causing or carcinogenic. The two primary carcinogens in tobacco smoke are chemicals known as nitrosamines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The risk of developing lung cancer decreases each year following smoking cessation as normal cells grow and replace damaged cells in the lung. In former smokers, the risk of developing lung cancer begins to approach that of a nonsmoker about 15 years after cessation of smoking.

Passive smoking Passive smoking, or secondhand smoke also referred to as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), presents another risk for lung cancer. An estimated 3,000 lung cancer deaths occur each year in the U.S. that are attributable to passive smoking.

Asbestos fibers Asbestos fibers are silicate fibers that can persist for a lifetime in lung tissue following exposure to asbestos. The workplace is a common source of exposure to asbestos fibers. Today, asbestos use is limited or banned in many countries. Lung cancer is associated with exposure to asbestos. Cigarette smoking drastically increases the chance of developing an asbestos-related lung cancer in workers exposed to asbestos.

Radon gas Radon gas, which occurs naturally in rocks and soil in certain areas, may cause lung damage and may eventually result in lung cancer if it seeps into your home. The presence of radon in the home can be measured using an inexpensive kit that can be purchased at department or hardware stores.

Survivors of lung cancer have a greater risk of developing a second lung cancer than the general population has of developing a first lung cancer.

Air pollution Pollution from vehicles, factories and power plants increases the risk of developing lung cancer. Exposure to air pollution is very similar to prolonged exposure to passive smoking. Air pollutants raise a high chase of developing lung cancer.

Fibrocystic Breast Disease - What Is It And How Do You Treat It?

by Wesley Soutter

Do your breasts feel lumpy, painful and tender, especially at the moment of month? Don't be concerned, not all lumps are cancerous. It is doable you'll have a standard condition referred to as fibrocystic breast disease. It is characterized by dense, noncancerous lumps that may trigger ache and tenderness, especially earlier than your menstrual cycle.

Fibrocystic illness is so common that fifty percent of girls might develop it at a while of their lives, although it is rarer in menopausal women. This has led doctors to speculate that's not a illness in any respect, but merely a harmless situation attributable to hormonal changes. The cause of fibrocystic illness just isn't really well known, and there are a selection of theories being bandied about, starting from high estrogen levels, hormonal fluctuations and genetic predisposition to extra caffeine, sugar and dietary fat.

Diagnosis: While most lumps will turn out to be noncancerous, it is best to get tested by your OB/GYN professional and find out for sure. Your doctor can perform a breast exam and do a mammogram to identify changes. A biopsy may be performed by aspirating tissue from the lump through a thin needle. An examination of the cells will reveal if the lump is benign or cancerous.

Remedies: There are a number of self-care methods that you can use to alleviate the symptoms. Eliminating or slicing down on caffeine consumption, proscribing dietary fats and sugar may help. Performing month-to-month self-examinations can assist you monitor changes.

So far as wearing a bra is concerned, there are conflicting theories. Whereas some experts recommend that a nicely-becoming bra can decrease pain and provide assist, others blame these very garments for causing this condition by reducing off circulation and preventing the drainage of poisons from the lymph nodes. You could avoid carrying a bra for some time to see if it makes any difference to your condition. Nutritional therapies akin to Vitamin B6, E, herbs and essential fatty acids, resembling those present in evening primrose oil, may help regulate fat metabolism and promote hormonal balance.

It's best to use a holistic treatment protocol that combines a healthy diet with self-care methods. Your OB/GYN professional can teach you self-examination techniques so you can monitor yourself for changes. If you're a woman over 40, you should also get regular mammograms. Fibrocystic breast disease does not increase your risk of developing cancer, but because it can make the detection of cancerous lumps more difficult, is important to get your regular check-ups to rule out any changes that occur with time.

Risks and Symptoms of Gallbladder Cancer Problems

by Miranda Laranjo

Approximately five thousand cases of gallbladder cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States. Most of these cases are found incidentally while a person is being examined for potential gallstones. Gallbladder cancer has a very poor prognosis, typically because the symptoms tend to be very vague and nonspecific. In addition the gallbladder is anatomically difficult to access surgically, making surgical interventions problematic. These factors often delay the diagnosis of gallbladder cancer until it is relatively advanced and make treatments more difficult.

Risk Factors

The risk of gallbladder cancer increases with age. Women are two to six times more likely to get gallbladder cancer than men. Gallbladder cancer is found more commonly in caucasians than in the black population.

Approximately 70 to 90% of people who come down with gallbladder cancer will also have a gallstone present. This makes the presence of gallstones one of the most important risk factors for the development of gall bladder cancer. It should be noted however that a vast majority of people with gallstones will never get gallbladder cancer. In fact, the rate of gallbladder cancer in patients with gallstones is only approximately 1 to 3%. The exact relationship between gallstones and gallbladder cancer is uncertain.

Another risk factor for gallbladder cancer is an uncommon condition associated with chronic gallstones known as porcelain gallbladder. Porcelain gallbladder is a condition where the interior wall of the gallbladder becomes calcified and smoothed, looking much like a porcelain surface. This condition is almost exclusively found in people with gallstones. The incidence of gallbladder cancer in patients with a porcelain gallbladder is quite high. Various studies have estimated the incidence to be anywhere from 15 to 50%.

The presence of small polyps within the gallbladder can be a risk factor for gallbladder cancer. These polyps are small outgrowths within the mucosal wall of the gallbladder, and are typically found incidentally when a patient is being evaluated for a different gallbladder issue. Gallbladder polyps can be benign or malignant, and the exact association between them and gallbladder cancer is not well established.

There are two infections which have been associated with increased risk of gallbladder cancer. The first of these is a Salmonella infection. Several studies have shown an increased risk of gallbladder cancer in people with chronic Salmonella infections of the gallbladder. The exact mechanism by which a chronic Salmonella infection can cause the gallbladder cancer is not well understood.

The other infection which has shown an association with gallbladder cancer is Helicobater pylori. H pylori is the same bacteria which is commonly associated with peptic ulcer disease. Once again, the exact association between this infection and gallbladder cancer is not well understood.

Signs and Symptoms

Gallbladder cancer can typically progress for many years without any symptoms. The first symptoms to appear are often nonspecific and can easily be confused with many other conditions. Patients will often complain of pain, lack of appetite, vomiting, and nausea. The symptoms are similar to what is seen with gallstones. As gallbladder cancer advances to later stages, a person will often become chronically tired and lose a significant amount of weight.

Many patients with gall bladder cancer will also become jaundiced. This means that there skin and eyes will become notably yellow.

Methods of Diagnosis

As with many cancers, the sooner gallbladder cancer is detected, the better the outcome can be. Because of the nonspecific nature of most of the symptoms, gallbladder cancer is typically detected by imaging the gallbladder directly.

The most commonly used imaging technique for any condition related to the gallbladder is an ultrasound. These tests are inexpensive, easy to perform, and not uncomfortable for a patient. Unfortunately there are limitations to the effectiveness of an ultrasound. These tests are highly dependent on the skill of the operator, and have a high rate of missing a diagnosis. Battling Cancer 3 Ways

by Greg Pierce

"One of the saddest realities of our times is cancer. Many people are stricken with it and many, if not most, of them pass away because of this dreaded disease. There is no known cure and those who are diagnosed with it somehow feel that they have just had a life sentence even until now. As always, good things come out of what may seem to be bad experiences, and this has led us to studies proving that while the disease may not be completely cured once it sets in, it can be prevented simply by practicing good habits throughout one's life. In particular, there are three areas or aspects we must look into - diet, lifestyle and knowledge.

Majority of the diseases that we will contract in our lifetimes will have something to do with the food we eat. Processed food is something we should eat less of due to the preservatives it contains in terms of cancer prevention. As we know, most preservatives are carcinogenic (cancer-causing) and in order for us to spare ourselves of this risk, we may simply cut back on, if not totally eradicate, processed food in our diet. Extreme amounts of sodium or salt and sugar should also be avoided if one were to prevent cancer. To boost our body's resistance against cancer-causing agents, it is good to eat organic food with high fiber and antioxidant content such as berries, broccoli, cauliflower, oranges, red apples and many others.[Search Amazon.com for cancer step outside the box]

The way of life is another thing we must consider changing appropriately if we are to fight the risks of cancer as we meet them in our day-to-day lives. Living against cancer can be as simple as practicing common sense such as maintaining one's ideal weight, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep - at least, eight hours of restful sleep which only happen at night. Simple things like taking time out to know whether a potential sexual partner has the cancer-causing human papilloma virus can mean a great deal when trying to avoid cancer. Many people take sleep for granted these days as they get so engrossed with their careers or social lives. Yes, there is a difference when you sleep eight hours at daytime and when you do at night. Our bodies are engineered in such a way that sleeping at daytime cannot be enough to compensate for lack of sleep at night. At least eight hours each night is enough.

Knowledge of things that can expose us to cancer is necessary for us to be able to avoid it. When we know electromagnetic fields can cause the disease, we can simply avoid or minimize our exposure when we can to X-rays or other procedures characterized by ionizing radiation which is a known cause of cancer. Environmental hazards which are inherently capable of causing cancer in humans must also be avoided. Heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, pesticides and the like are among these.

If you have a family member who has the disease, you can explore together natural cancer cures which promote holistic cancer treatment. This might come as a new idea, but it is something worth trying if it means possibly finding the solution to overcoming the cancer in any form it may come." A Guide To Mesothelioma Symptoms And Causes

by Tom Addison

You may have heard quite a bit about mesothelioma, but you may not be aware of what it is. This disease is classified as a rare type of cancer that affects thousands of people each year. If you are interested in learning more about this disease, the information in this article can help.

There are different types of this condition and they each affect different organs within the body. The rarer types of this disease will affect the lining of the heart or the lining of the abdominal cavity. The most prominent form of this disease affects the lungs and can cause a wide variety of health complications.

The majority of the people who are diagnosed with this condition will have contracted it due to asbestos exposure. People who live in developed countries today generally have very limited chances of being exposed to this substance. However, people who work or have worked for industrial companies or in very old buildings may have an increased risk of being exposed to asbestos.

There are many symptoms that occur in people who have this condition. For example, you may experience a shortness of breath, chest pain, weight loss, and fatigue. You may also experience wheezing, coughing, abdominal pain, or problems with moving your bowels.

There are quite a few different treatments for this condition. Currently, many people regularly take prescription drugs in order to curb their symptoms and improve their condition. Since this disease is a form of cancer, chemotherapy treatments are often used and some people may also be eligible to participate in clinical trials for new types of treatments.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms that are related to mesothelioma, you should contact your physician immediately, and you should also assess the likelihood that you have been exposed to asbestos. When you visit with your doctor, you should be prepared to talk about all of your symptoms and you should tell your doctor about any times when you may have been exposed to asbestos.

Breast Cancer's Lessons for the Lives We Live Details

by Ben Gannon

"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you stop to look fear in the face." ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Five years ago I knew breast cancer only in the abstract. It hadn't touched my life yet. I wondered how it was that so many women and a few men became hosts to a disease which started eating them up and, left untreated, could kill them. Had it always been this way? If not what has changed? I knew some cancer survivors and heard tales of a woman who died of breast cancer before I had a chance to meet her.

Then my beloved companion joined her mother and two sisters in the family struggle with breast cancer. The discovery immediately took over our relationship, first inviting panic and then survival strategies. Would she recover as did her older sister? Would she succumb to the disease as did her mother and younger sister? What was her prognosis? What should she do? What could I do?

Now, five years later, she has reached an important milestone in her recovery and survival. Each step in her treatment raised questions, challenges and fears. Eventually we tamed our concerns and made the necessary decisions. She endured treatment while I provided what support I could. Our life was different but we survived the ordeal and drew closer together in the process.

Recently I sat in a room full of several hundred breast cancer survivors, some of a few months and some of many years. They came together to raise money for breast cancer treatment and research. They dined and participated in a Chinese auction of gift baskets and a silent auction of bras elaborately decorated by craftswomen whose creations had been exhibited in a celebration of breast cancer awareness. Mostly they celebrated their courage and solidarity.

I wondered again about why people contract breast or any other sort of cancer. Mutated genes have been discovered to make breast cancer more likely. Clusters of cancer sufferers suggest environmental factors. Most likely is a combination of hereditary and environmental contributors.

Fortunately, research advances now make cancer a much less likely death sentence. Genetic testing helps make us aware of our risks. Research promises new, less primitive, treatments more in the near future. We also know more about how lifestyle such as nutrition, fitness and avoiding carcinogens can help keep us from cancer's grasp.

In these days when we are divided politically, culturally and religiously, it is reassuring to know that we can come together to fight cancer. Think of the pink gloves NFL players wear this month. Perhaps the fight against cancer can serve as a model for better cooperation between people in other areas as well. Uterine Cancer Prognosis: Options and Treatment

by Shields Comptois

Medical science is getting improved with every passing day but there are still many diseases which are almost incurable if they are diagnosed in last stages. Among these difficult to cure diseases, cancer is top of the list. What is cancer? And what are the causes of cancer?

Human body has an automatic system of cell reconstruction; through this system the old cells of body die and new cells replace them. But sometimes body starts making new cells even when body does not need them. These extra cells make extra tissues and those tissues are called tumors, which cause cancer. Many types of cancers are there but in ladies the most common cancer type is uterine cancer. It begins in the womb of a woman.

A woman's reproductive system allows a new life to come in this world and uterus is that place where that life grows. Uterus walls are made up of two types of tissues, endometrium and myometrium. Endometrium tissues make inner side of uterus while second type of tissues make outer side of uterus.

When it comes for uterine cancer, then almost 40% of this cancer occur in endometrium tissue means inner part of uterus. Although thiscancer type is very rare in those women who are below 40 and usually it appears in 55 to 65 years old women; but still it is considered a scary disease. But the prognosis of uterine cancer tells the truth and provides guideline for the treatment which should be given to patient.

In medicine a prognosis is the prediction about the course of a disease and a detailed prognosis tells about full description about the disease and the expected time that patient has. In uterine cancer the prognosis is dependent on some factors like type of cancer cells, stage of cancer, age of patient and many more.

The prognosis has great importance in this disease because it helps doctor for the selection of treatment. If uterine cancer is in initial stages and prognosis report is positive, then chemotherapy and radiation treatment will be used by doctors otherwise surgery is considered the only solution.

Whatever the stage of uterine cancer is, it is important to keep one thing in mind that prognosis is only the prediction. Every disease can be defeated by strong will and spiritual support. So even prognosis is not encouraging even then one should not lose hope and try to defeat her disease.

Better And Safer Alternatives To Dangerous Mammography

by Angelina Grove

First and foremost, we must avoid all forms of medical radiation. They are damaging to our health. Prevention is also very important and must be thought of. Research has found that something as simple as supplementing with Vitamin D can slash the risk of cancers by 77%. Vitamin D can be attained by natural exposure to sunshine (don't use sunscreens) as well as cod liver oil. Another product that helps in the fight against developing breast cancer is flax oil, flax lignans and flax meal. Your lifestyle must be closely monitored. If you are diagnosed with cancer, a change in lifestyle is the only factor that has been scientifically proven to extend the average life span of women with breast cancer. That positive change in lifestyle helps to boost the immune system and stops feeding cancer cells. You must stop feeding those cancer cells what they thrive on, including all dairy products (even fat-free), beef, pork, lamb, veal, all sugars, all processed foods, flour, alcohol and tobacco. Of course, it's best to avoid these foods prior to being diagnosed with the disease. This subject of prevention maintenance alone consists of enough information for another article.

In regards to methods of testing for early detection, there are several alternative options to mammography. Unfortunately, our medical institutions and the large organizations dedicated to fighting breast cancer are not doing their part to educate the general public on these safer, more effective alternatives.

Aside from self-examination techniques and physical exams by a doctor, one such excellent alternative is breast thermography. Thermography is a non invasive method that does not require radiation, any painful compression, or intravenous injection. Thermography uses digital infrared imaging to measure the temperature differences within the breast. Not only is Thermography safer, but it appears to be much more accurate than mammograms. Although Thermograpy has been around since the 60's, it wasn't until 1982 when the FDA had approved them and they became more reliable. For more information about Thermogrophy, visit BreastThermogrophy.com and International Academy of Thermology.

Another better alternative to mammograms are MRI's (Magnetic resonance imaging). This method is far more superior to mammograms in the early detection of breast cancer. But I find it rather strange that something so superior and safer is considered to be useful only after undergoing a dangerous mammogram or biopsy. Even The American Cancer Society admits that MRI's are superior yet they choose to reserve if for higher risk scenarios. They claim that it's more expensive thus not as readily covered by most insurance plans. Hmm, with all that money being raised for research and free mammograms, wouldn't you think that a big chunk of that would be better spent on safer alternatives such as MRI's and Thermography?

Always remember that information is power and that you must do all that you can to seek out that information so that you can be intelligently informed before making a decision that may negatively affect your health. We should never accept that one person or a major organization has the final say in how we should be diagnosed or treated. Settling on the status quo and accepting procedures and medicines that are doing more harm than good is unacceptable and we must do what we can to encourage the healthcare industry to research better methods and accept the safer alternatives that currently exist!

This is part two in a two part series of articles on mammograms. The complete article can be found at www.anthonynunes.net/monthly_article/mammograms.html.

How To Detect Colon Cancer

by Jason Bishop

A big part of the difference between the survival rates connected with colon cancer is early detection. Because there aren't any huge signals or extraordinarily troublesome symptoms when you develop the disease it is essentially up to the person to be attentive in going to a doctor to get regular screenings for the factors behind cancer. When you think that cancer could be a problem or if you'd like to frequently appraise your risk for colon cancer, the following screening tests are the finest tests to see colon cancer in a patient.

Two of the commonest test performed to test and confirm colon cancer are a colonoscopy or a lower GI series, which is an x-ray which will show the growth or growths. If you go to consult a medical expert for regular checkups, a colonoscopy should become a regular routine part of the physical after you've reached the age of 50. People over 50 years old have an increased rate of colon cancer and regular tests are the most effective way to catch them before they are able to grow for too much time.

A second straightforward to perform test during regular checkups is a digital anal examination, which any doctor can perform without special kit in one or two minutes. In the case of a double contrast barium enema, a couple of x-rays of the colon and rectum are taken after barium is taken by the patient. While this kind of testing isn't the most actual, and it does not catch all of the possible polyps that may line the colon, it is pretty trustworthy as a testing methodology for colon cancer. Another very telling way to see colon cancer in patients is thru the utilisation of a Faecal Occult Blood Test which tests for blood that might be in stool.

Bleeding is among the symptoms that you could have colon cancer, but in the initial stages any blood that could be present is highly invisible to the Naked eye. Two different tests essentially do a similar thing, notice any little trace amounts of blood. These tests can be performed on a yearly or biannual foundation for those people who are at a serious risk of getting colon cancer. The other regularly used test to see colon cancer is often known as Sigmoidoscopy and it includes using a sigmoidoscope to screen for carcinogenic growths that are in the rectum and colon.

Thru regular screening with a sigmoidoscope it is easy to catch cancer cancers before they get to enormous and spread to other organs in the body. All these different tests aren't often used at the exact same time, but if you've not had any suggestion of colon cancer during the past, the less aggressive tests are used to screen before more drastic tests are attempted. It's essential to go through some variety of screening though once you reach the age of 50 so you can catch any real issues prior to them becoming big problems.

Skin Cancer and Tanning Beds Are Closely Associated

by Slite Twine

It is a very common saying nowadays that applying tanning methods indoors are very risky as they tend to cause damage not only to your delicate skin but also to your eyes. Thus it is very important to gather adequate knowledge about skin cancer and tanning beds that are said to be frightening issues. Before going to further discussion, we should recognize the factors related to sunburns which are said to cause the threat of mainly three types of skin cancer in individuals. They are categorized as Basal Cell Carcinoma(BCC), Melanoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma(SCC) skin cancer. The Journal from National Cancer Institute stated some interesting points related to products like tanning beds and its association to skin cancers. The result according to this magazine indicated that skin cancer and tanning bedsare interrelated and there is high risk for people who use tanning beds to be hit by either basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinomas type skin cancer.

In this close observational study, 603 people were taken who are hit by basal cell carcinoma, while 293 patients who are affected by squamous cell carcinoma. And the rest 540 individuals were taken who were not hit with such cancer at all. The individuals chosen belonged to both sex and within the 25 and 74 age group. The testing for associating skin cancer and tanning beds was done to determine the state of each participant having skin cancer and tanning beds users as well. All these individuals were tested studying factors like their sunburn tendency, the total time they spent outdoors, their use of a tanning bed or tanning booth, on their frequency of tobacco use, factors regarding their prior radiation treatment, and their final utilizing of a tanning bed.

Comparison was further made with skin cancer patients using tanning equipment before diagnosis and non-cancerous persons who also used tanning equipment. The result of associating skin cancer and tanning beds showed that people using tanning bed or tanning booth are said to be 2.5 times adaptable to disease of squamous type or 1.5 times more to basal cancer then those who didn't have cancer at all.

The tanning equipment usually releases UVA rays which incorporate UVB rays that are very harmful. UVA rays are said to cause melanoma which is considered as the deadliest of all skin cancers. Such rays further accelerate the threat of other types of skin cancers.

Whatsoever we like that golden tans in our skin when we see the association with skin cancer and tanning beds type tanning devices, we must avoid them to get rid of the dangerous disease like skin cancer.

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Good Nutrition

by Jim Duffy

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a cancer that develops in the lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. White blood cells are part of the body's immune system, which fights infections and diseases that the body encounters. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is about five times more common than Hodgkin's disease, another general type of lymphoma that is found in the body. Early detection and treatment are vital for thiscancer.

The symptoms of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can be easy to mistake for other illnesses and there are many cases where there are no symptoms at all. In some cases there may be a swollen but mostly painless lymph node found in the neck, the armpit, or in the groin area. Other signs that might be noticed include fever, night sweats, fatigue, weight loss, abdominal pain or swelling, chest pain, coughing, trouble breathing, and extremely itchy skin. (Source: The Mayo Clinic.com)

Risk factors for this type of cancer include: having an organ transplant or other use of immunosuppressant drugs, AIDS, infection with Helicobacter pylori (also called H.pylori, it is known to cause ulcers), exposure to certain types of chemicals like those that are used to kill insects and weeds. Infection with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma also increases with age and it becomes most common in people who are age 60 or over. There are no age limits however, and the disease has been found in every age group.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is usually diagnosed by: physical exam, blood and urine tests, X-ray, CT scan, MRI, or PET scan. Biopsy of a suspicious lymph node may be done to confirm diagnosis and to determine the growth rate of the tumor so that a cause of action can be determined. A bone marrow biopsy may also be necessary to find out if the disease has spread to other areas of the body. The disease is classified by about thirty types and is also given a number to determine its stage. Stage I is the beginning stage and it is considered to be the most treatable.

Treatments include surgery to remove the tumors if possible, chemotherapy, radiation, and stem cell transplantation. In some cases, observation can be used especially in the case of very slow growing tumors. Biotherapy using several different types of medications is often used as well. Interferon therapy is another common treatment plan for those with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Interferons are types of protein that are a normal part of the immune system that work to fight viral infection. There are other treatment types that are less common as well as some that are considered to be experimental in nature.

A Healthy Diet for a Strong Immune System

Like other cancers, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma will attack the body where it is most vulnerable, especially during times of lowered immunity or at the site of other infections. The body's immune system needs to be strong- requiring a healthy, well balanced diet. Once the disease is found, extra protein will be needed so that the body is strong enough to continue fighting and to build up the immune system. The doctor will discuss exactly how much protein you will need as well as how much is actually safe for you to add to your daily diet. The American Heart Association recommends that protein make up no more than 35% of the daily diet, however when fighting cancer of any kind as well as other illnesses, it might be necessary to go beyond this amount.

A healthy diet should include the right proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, in the right amounts. Eating small meals frequently can help with the nausea involved with chemotherapy.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for the body. Simple carbs are the white sugars, white flours and overly sweet foods that make the blood glucose level skyrocket and may overly stress the immune system. Complex carbohydrates digest much more slowly in the body and are typically healthier. Good sources of complex carbohydrates include the whole grain foods and some vegetables. The healthy diet should consist of 50-60% complex carbohydrates.

Fats

Healthy fats, especially the monounsaturated and those that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids are also vital to the healthy diet. Omega3's are found in salmon and other cold water fishes. Other good sources of Omega 3's include nuts and olive oil.

Proteins

Protein comes from two sources, animals and plants. Animal protein, including low fat dairy foods and eggs are complete proteins because they have all eight essential amino acids that the body does not produce on its own. Amino acids are broken down during digestion and used to make other amino acids, hormones and enzymes that are vital to other functions in the body, including, ironically, digestion. With the exception of soy protein though, plant proteins are incomplete because they lack one or more of these eight essential amino acids. Plant proteins come from beans, grains, seeds, and nuts.

In addition to natural food sources for proteins, there are a number of protein supplements including powders, shakes, bars, and liquid protein supplement shots. All protein supplements are made from either a plant or animal protein with some made from a combination of protein sources for the best digestion and health benefits. The type of protein supplement that is best for you will depend on a number of factors including your diet, food allergies or sensitivities, and nutritional needs.

Diet

If you are simply adding protein to your diet, you only need to choose your protein, based on your tastes and by what is most convenient. However, if there are dietary considerations like vegetarianism, it is important to pay attention to the type of protein supplement so that you are choosing the right one that still fits in with your choices. Good protein supplements that are appropriate for vegans are soy and rice, both made wholly from plant proteins. Both are considered to be complete protein sources and can be found in protein shakes and protein powders.

Food Allergies

Whey protein is one of the best protein supplements to use for immune system strengthening, however it is not good for those who might be lactose intolerant. Whey protein isolate has less lactose than whey protein concentrate and may be okay for those with only moderate milk and milk product sensitivities. Soy protein is a good choice instead; however there are some who are allergic to soy as well. Rice protein may be the best for those with known or suspected food allergies because it is hypoallergenic. It is important to keep these considerations in mind when looking for a protein bar as well.

Nutritional Needs

The protein supplement should supply a good amount of protein but without added sugars or fats. Increased sugar can deplete the immune system which is an increased danger for those at high risk or diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Profect, from Protica is a liquid protein supplement shot that is small enough to carry anywhere but still gives 25 grams of digestible protein per serving. It also gives a full day's worth of vitamin C and 10% of the daily supply of the B vitamins. Profect comes in flavors including Blue Raspberry, Cool Melon Splash, Passion Fruit, Grapefruit-Mango, Fuzzy Peach Nectar, and Fresh Citrus Berry.

Why Protein Supplementation is Important for Cancer Patients

by Jim Duffy

Protein supplementation is important for cancer patients for several reasons, though the most important is connected with appetite. People with any form of malignant condition tend to eat less. This means that what they do eat should have the highest possible nutritional content. The four most important forms of nutrition are:

Carbohydrates

These can be converted to glucose and then to the energy required for your vital functions, such as breathing, digestion, and circulation. You don't need energy only for exercise or moving around, but also to stay alive. Your metabolism uses a lot of energy while the body is at rest, and carbohydrates are essential for everybody, especially if you have some form of malignant condition.

Vitamins

Vitamins are essential for life; hence the Latin prefix vita which is translates to life. Without a supply of essential vitamins your vital processes, including your immune system, would gradually shut down. Fortunately, there are supplements that can be taken to compensate for any deficiency in your diet.

Minerals

Minerals are also essential components of your body's biochemistry. In order for your body to work properly you also need minerals such as calcium and a good supply of trace elements such as chromium and vanadium. This is true whether you are a cancer patient or not. Many vitamins cannot do their jobs without minerals to help them.

Amino Acids

Amino acids are the building blocks of life. They form the proteins that enable organic life to exist, they are involved in every life process and bodily structure, and they form the molecules of life: DNA. Amino acids are available in your diet and come in the form of proteins which your digestive system breaks down into the amino acids you need.

Protein supplementation then becomes beneficial because concentrated protein supplements provide the proteins necessary to generate all the amino acids you need, both when undergoing radiation and chemo therapies, and when recovering. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy can cause nausea and make you very sick. This ruins your appetite, so that is why it is important for the food you do consume to have a higher nutritional content.

Concentrated protein supplementation will provide you with the amino acids you need to maintain your body's biochemistry. Amino acids are the building blocks for enzymes, proteins, and DNA, which all are essential for organic life- plant and animal. Without amino acids there would be no life - at least not as we know it on earth. By taking protein supplements cancer patients have a better chance of recovery because they have a higher nutritional intake which provides the ability to maintain their strength and withstand their treatment and condition.

If you suffer from any form of malignant tumor, you should take a concentrated protein supplementation because doing so will enable you to receive necessary vitamins and minerals while still allowing you to consume carbohydrates needed to provide the energy for your life processes. A protein supplement in a concentrated form is easier to take, will provide less nausea, and will aid you both in your treatment and your subsequent recovery.

NOTE: It is important that cancer patients inform their doctors or physicians of any form of protein supplementation they are taking.

Cancer and Nutritional Needs

by Jim Duffy

Cancer is the general name for well over 200 different diseases, each with some common traits that can affect virtually every part of the body, including the organs. These common traits include abnormal cell division, the tendency to be invasive and the tendency to spread from one area to another. Cancer is typically named for the body part or organ where it is first discovered or can be named for the kind of tissue in which it arises.

- Adenocarcinomas: found in glandular tissue

- Sarcomas: connective tissue

- Adenosarcomas: both connective and gland tissues

- Leukemias: blood cells

- Lymphomas: lymph nodes

- About 85% of all cancers are solid tumors.

(Source: Ammer 2005)

In women, reproductive cancers (breast cancer or pelvic area cancers) make up about half of all cases. In women, lung cancer is the biggest cause of cancer-related death, followed by breast, endometrial and ovarian cancers. The earlier that a cancer is found, the better the prognosis. There are a number of tests that should be done, especially for certain risk groups, with recommendations given for these tests. In addition, there are some dietary suggestions that the American Cancer Society suggests as being beneficial to reducing cancer risk. In addition, nutrition during the treatments of cancer (surgery, chemotherapy and radiation) is also very important.

Cancer - Warning Signs to Watch For

While these warning signs are not perfect by any means, it is important to not only know them, but also to pay heed to them and have them checked by a doctor if you notice any of the following:

- A change in bowel or bladder habits

- A sore that does not heal

- Unusual bleeding or discharge

- A thickening or lump in the breast or anywhere else

- Persistent indigestion or difficulty swallowing

- Changes in a wart or mole

- A nagging cough or an unusually hoarse voice

(Source: The American Cancer Society)

Not all cancers will present with all or even with any of these warning signs, as some cancers are silent and will grow without any kind of hint at all. Prostate cancer, for instance, can lay dormant in the body for decades. Many men who die from other causes may have actually had prostate cancer without ever having known it. It is important for men to be tested for prostate cancer regularly, however, the preferred course of treatment is to wait and see. There is no actual medical intervention if there is no physical impairment or if the cancer is not invading other structures at the time of its discovery.

Testing Schedules for Cancer

There are a number of screening tests that the American Cancer Society recommends for those without other risk factors. Those who do have an increased risk, including a family history of particular cancers, should follow the guidelines established by their own physician.

These guidelines:

- Sigmoidoscopy (preferably flexible) should be done for both genders starting at age fifty and should be repeated every 3-5 years.

- Fecal occult blood test (checks for bowel cancer) should be done for both genders starting at age fifty and should be done yearly.

- Digital rectal exams for both genders, starting at age forty, should be done yearly.

- Pap tests (which checks for cervical cancer by looking at cervical cells) should be done for all women who have become sexually active or have reached the age of 18. There is some controversy over how often the pap smear should be repeated, with the doctors suggesting that it be done every year until there have been three normal tests in a row and then every two years. The insurance industry is suggesting that the testing interval be every two to three years if there are no abnormalities found. Each woman's doctor should be allowed to make the decision for these tests individually. In addition, the HPV test may be better than the standard pap smear at catching cervical cancer in its earliest and therefore most treatable period. (Source: Seppa 2009)

- Pelvic exams for women, with two different guidelines: for women ages 18-40, it should be done every 1-3 years and for those over 40, every year.

- Endometrial tissue samples should be done for the first time after a woman has reached menopause. The doctor will define how often this should be done for women who are considered to be at high risk.

- Breast self exams should be done by women at home every month once they reach the age of 18-20. The doctor should show the woman how to do this correctly. There are also charts online that you can print out and follow until you are comfortable with the best procedure. (A tip: doing your breast exam in the shower is the easiest way to do it, because the soap and water allows your fingers to glide over your skin in a much smoother way.)

- Mammography should be done starting at age 50 and repeated every 1-2 years, unless the woman is deemed high risk.

Dietary Suggestions to Reduce the Risk of Cancer

There are several foods that the American Cancer Society recommends as being beneficial to reducing the risk of developing certain cancers. These foods are:

- Soy or dried beans. Both contain plant estrogens, which may reduce the risk of certain pelvic cancers as well as breast cancer.

- Tomatoes, carrots and red peppers. These are rich in vitamin C as well as carotenoids, which may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

- Greens and cruciferous vegetables. These may reduce the risk of lung, colon, rectal, stomach and esophageal cancers. They may also play a role in reducing additional cancers, including breast, bladder, pancreas and larynx cancers.

- Garlic, onion and leeks. These contain allium compounds that may reduce the risk of breast cancer.

- Olive oil. It may reduce the risk of breast cancer.

- Milk and milk products. They may reduce the risk of breast and colon cancers

- Salmon and other oily fish. They may reduce one's overall cancer risk.

Food combinations to try as well:

- Ground flaxseed (provides fiber, lignans and plant-sourced omega 3's) plus berries, cottage cheese or soybeans may reduce the risk of breast, prostate and colorectal cancers. To try these, mix a handful of berries and a tablespoon of ground flaxseed into a serving of low fat cottage cheese.

- Olive oil and vegetables (provides phytochemicals, omega 3's and vitamins and minerals) may allow for better nutrient absorption as well as protection for some cancers. To try these, make a stir fry of your favorite veggies, using a small amount of good quality olive oil to fry them.

- Tea and tofu (provides anthocyanin, proanthocyanin and catechin as well as soy protein) may stop cancer before it starts. To try these, using your favorite flavor of tea (white, green, black, red or herbal) and silken tofu, make a bubbly and creamy dessert. Brew the tea and then allow it to cool to room temperature. Soften and blend the tofu until extra creamy, stirring in the tea (about a cup to 1 cup of the tofu). Toss in berries for flavor, or choose raw almonds. Spoon into dessert cups and serve as is or refrigerate for a slightly firmer texture.

- Low fat dairy products plus Vitamin D fortified foods that provide calcium both and Vitamin D may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

The Need for Protein

In addition to the foods that are recommended by the American Cancer Society and other experts, protein is beneficial in dealing withcancer for a number of reasons. First, it plays a large role in the immune system, primarily because antibodies are proteins. Second, a number of the essential amino acids that are provided by protein foods and supplements are beneficial to the immune system as well. Finally, protein helps the body to stay strong and healthy overall, and makes it more able to handle the rigors of cancer and cancertreatments. Profect, from Protica, is a great source of protein (with 25 full grams of protein per serving) and is one of the most portable ways to take your nutrition with you. It also has all of the Vitamin C that you need for the day, as well as 10% of B vitamins.

First Signs of Skin Cancer Could be Passed Down

by Kirsten Whittaker

To protect against the early signs of skin cancer, everybody knows to wear sunscreen and keep out of the sun in between those peak time periods, but a pair of recent studies each propose an inherited element for this type of cancer that individuals cannot avoid.

Earlier studies in this area suggested that melanoma and other skin cancers may possibly run in families, but research workers frequently find it difficult to differentiate between genetics as well as the environmental factors so the question remained unanswered.

An Australian study tried to address this challenge by looking at sets of twins where 1 twin had been diagnosed with melanoma. Making use of 125 twins (27 sets of identical twins, 98 sets of fraternal twins) the study found that having an identical twin who had melanoma increased a person's own risk of developing the same illness practically ten fold.

Having a fraternal twin with this form of skin cancer practically doubled the other twin's danger of being diagnosed as well.

This suggests that some of the elevated melanoma risk could be because of your genes, specifically the interaction between genes. The Australian experts calculate that genes account for about 50 % of the difference in skin cancer risk in between two people.

The second study, conducted by a team from theUniversity of California, L .A . checked out the threat of a number of sorts of cancer of the skin amongst the siblings or kids of people clinically determined to have skin cancer.

They found that a person's risk of skin cancer (of numerous kinds, not just the ones a relation had) grows if they have a sibling or mother or father having a non-melanoma cancer of the skin.

It could well be that your family members history can be employed to determine your individual skin cancer danger.

This year, an estimated one million instances of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United Statesalone. What's more, cancer of the skin can happen to anyone, at any time, even if you are totally free from risk factors (fair coloring, a loved ones history, serious sunburn at an early age or age) which explains why you must always speak to your physician about any growth in your skin that alter form, bleeds or doesn't repair itself.

In the event you have a close family member that has (or had) skin cancer, your most effective defense is your awareness of the elevated risk you could have. Be extra-careful about the sun, limiting your direct exposure throughout peak (10:00 am - 2:00 pm) hours and utilizing sunscreen or protective clothing year round.

Look over your skin on a regular basis (making use of a mirror as necessary) for any skin mole, sore or skin growth that pops up or changes. Be aware of

Asymmetry - one half of the mole is diverse in comparison to the other.

Edge - the outlines of the mole are abnormal

Coloration - can differ from one area to another in pigments of tan, brown or black, occasionally even white, red or blue

Dimension - if larger than 6 mm (the size of a pencil eraser)

Remember, a family history is just a risk factor based on these latest findings - the genes you carry don't promise you anything. Your smart choice if you're concerned with regards to the early indicators of cancer of the skin is to make changes to control the health risks you can control, be aware and remain informed.

Colon Cancer and Good Nutritional Needs

by Jim Duffy

Colon cancer is often called the silent killer because it grows for years in the lower intestine before it is large enough to create symptoms. Colorectal cancer is also one of the most preventable of the hundreds of types of cancer but is said to affect around 96,000 people in the United States ever year. (Source: Feinstein, ed. 1996) While prevention is the key, once the cancer is detected, early treatment can be effective and typically involves surgery to remove the cancer itself as well as chemotherapy, radiation, or a treatment. A healthy diet will also be key to recovery and to remaining cancer free as well. In fact, a healthy diet is crucial to prevention of colon cancer in the first place.

The symptoms that you feel with colon cancer may depend on where the tumor is growing and how large it has become and can include fatigue and weakness (right side of the colon), alternating constipation and diarrhea, a nagging abdominal pain, and blood streaked or black appearing stools.

There are several tests that are recommended for all people, starting at age 40 and those in the high risk categories should be tested more frequently or may need to start getting tested sooner. The earlier this cancer is found the easier its treatment may be.

A digital rectal exam should be done as part of the annual physical every year starting at 40. The fecal occult blood test should be done every year after age 50. A flexible sigmoidoscopy which not only looks for but can remove precancerous polyps should be done every three to five years, depending on risk factors, after age 50. A barium enema may also be recommended with suspicious or inconclusive results suggesting the need for a colonoscopy, however experts are now suggesting that the barium enema step be skipped and the colonoscopy performed at regular intervals instead. (Source: The American Cancer Society)

The high risk category for colon cancer includes: those who have had precancerous or cancerous polyps in the past, family history of coloncancer before age 60 or those who themselves have had ovarian or endometrial cancer before age 50. Heredity plays a role in about 20% of all colon cancers in the United States, however there are other risk factors as well. These include: inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. A diet that is high in fat but low in fiber is also a major risk factor for the disease. (Source: Ammer 2005)

The Best Colon Cancer Prevention Diet

A high fiber, low fat diet is the best way to prevent colon cancer and should include a variety of fruits and vegetables so that you get a rainbow of vitamins and minerals for all the antioxidant power. Fiber is thought to help harmful compounds get pushed through the digestive system before they have a chance to cause any kind of harm and before they get a chance to settle into the walls of the intestine and start building any of the growths that can turn to cancer. The aim of the high fiber diet is to produce one significant bowel movement or more, every day. Good sources of fiber include beans, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. You can opt for a fiber supplement if you are afraid that you are not getting enough.

In addition to plenty of fiber, your healthy diet should include enough water and sources of water to prevent constipation. When fiber is eaten it swells and becomes bulky as it heads down the digestive tract. It sweeps the intestinal walls as it goes, picking up the waste products and harmful substances that have been left behind from previous meals.

Without enough water, the stools can become hard and will not flow through the system correctly leading to constipation and possibly to an impaction. A fecal impaction can lead to a serious medical emergency which may, if warranted, require surgery. Just as you can tell that you are getting enough fiber if you have to move your bowels at least once per day, you can tell if you are getting enough water if you have to urinate every two to three hours. The urine should be very light in color with no discernible odor. Dark, concentrated urine and a strong odor can indicate a bladder infection even without other symptoms.

Red meat should be avoided with protein coming from lean, healthier choices including plant proteins. Red meats are high in dangerous saturated fats and calories. You can eat a small portion of red meat if you cannot give it up completely, however it should be limited to once or twice a week at most. The same suggestion goes for alcohol, which should also be limited to only a drink or two, a week.

A healthy diet should also include enough of the minerals calcium and magnesium which may need to be supplemented in some cases, to make sure that there is enough in the system. Be wary of alternative cures or treatments that suggest that you can take excessively high doses of certain vitamins and be cancer free without surgery or other treatments, not only have they been shown not to work, they may be even more dangerous in the long run.

Your healthy diet should start with the basics of all good nutrition: proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.

Proteins -- Protein is a part of every single cell in the body and is needed for the role it plays in every function. While it is necessary to build and repair lean muscle mass, protein is also important for sleep, digestion, and the act of ovulation. We can get our protein from foods and from protein supplements and we should get the right amount determined by our age, our gender, our health, and our activity level. A good guideline is about .6 grams per kilogram of body weight and the American Heart Association recommends that we get no more than 35% of our daily calories from protein of any source.

Protein comes from two sources, plants and animals. Animal proteins are all complete because they supply the eight essential amino acids that humans cannot produce in their own body. These eight (leucine, isoleucine, valine, threonine, methione, tryptophan, phenylalanine, and lysine) are broken down during digestion and used to make other amino acids, hormones and enzymes to be used throughout the body. Animal proteins include both meat and non-meat sources and should be as lean as possible. The egg is considered to be the perfect protein and all others are evaluated against it. All of the protein in the egg is digested and used by the body giving it a 100% on the bioavailability score. Low fat milk, cheese, and other dairy products are good sources of protein, calcium, and other nutrients. Low fat milk, especially chocolate milk has been called one of the perfect after-exercise drinks because it can help in muscle recovery.

Plant proteins are not complete, with the exception of soy because they lack one or more of the essential amino acids. It is a myth that vegetarians or vegans are protein deficient, as long as they are getting a variety of plant materials, especially soy, they will get more than enough protein. Soy protein also has the benefit of being heart healthy and can help to lower the blood cholesterol as part of a healthy diet.

Protein supplements can be added and are especially beneficial to those who have gone through surgery for colon cancer. The body needs extra protein when it is ill or recovering as well as for those who are going through chemotherapy and/or radiation. The supplement that you choose should have plenty of protein, other nutrients and be appealing so that you will actually drink it. Profect, from Protica is small, so it only takes a few seconds to drink it, however it supplies a full 25 grams of protein per serving and comes in a number of appealing, fruit based flavors.

Keeping Up Your Strength While Dealing with Cancer Treatment

by Jim Duffy

There are certain cancers that can affect the ability to eat, especially to swallow. In addition, some cancers in the stomach or other parts of the digestive system may leave you feeling full, even when you haven't been eating anything at all. Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can leave you feeling nauseous or too weak to bother eating. Even on days when you are not feeling nausea at all, you still may not have much of an appetite. You may be too worried or stressed out to eat. You may be too depressed to eat. Trying to eat enough to keep up your strength is important so that you have a better outcome.

There are many things to keep in mind when dealing with cancer, no matter what form or type you have. Well meaning friends and family can make you feel worse and may try to push you to eat certain foods or to avoid certain other foods. If you are at the end stage of yourcancer, certain dietary rules are not going to apply any longer - why bother with low-sodium or low-fat it if will not affect the outcome at all?

Keep in mind that there are a number of studies that have been done about the benefits of certain foods, while others that contradict these studies. There are so many conflicting reports and studies that it may be impossible to tell which ones to believe and which ones you should not. It is important to follow the guidelines that are established for you by your doctor and/or nutritionist so that you are able to stay at your optimal health level. Both chemo and radiation will reduce your immune system, so trying to stay strong is important.

Careful planning of snacks and meals can allow you to have foods handy for when you actually feel up to eating, and supplements can be used even on days when you are not concerned with eating.

Laura, age 38 and newly diagnosed with breast cancer, is not looking forward to her upcoming round of chemotherapy. She is working toward setting up her life so that it is as easy as possible for her and her 20 year old son, but she knows that it is going to be a struggle. She has always been a health conscious eater, so some of the suggestions might be problematic for her, but she will do whatever she needs to do to fight back from this disease.

How and When to Eat

In some kinds of cancer, there is a constant feeling of fullness in addition to a lack of appetite, so it might be necessary to start eating on a schedule instead of waiting for hunger. It also might be easier to eat small amounts every one to two hours instead of eating at "normal" mealtimes. If you actually have a moment when you feel hungry, then eat something - do not miss a chance to eat when hunger strikes unless you have been restricted from eating because of an upcoming treatment.

Like a person who has had a gastric bypass surgery, the cancer patient should limit or eliminate fluids during meals because they will fill you up quicker without giving you the nutrition that you need. Follow the same guidelines as for weight loss surgery and drink the fluids 30-60 minutes before or after your meal. Laura's doctor suggests that she drink a small glass of wine about an hour before her evening meals, both to relax her and to stimulate her appetite.

Know what triggers your nausea. For some people it might be some smells, colors or sights. For other people it might be certain foods themselves. Avoid the triggers as much as you can and make the meal as pleasant as possible. For Laura, smells such as coffee and bacon make her ill and she cannot tolerate anything yellow on her plate.

If you feel up to it and the doctor approves, you may be able to take a walk in the fresh air to stimulate your appetite. However, there are some precautions because of the lowered immune system, including not walking in large crowds, not getting overly tired or not walking in the cold or the rain.

Calorie needs may be extreme during this period as your body works to rebuild the immune system and to fight back against the cancerthat has invaded it. Adding additional calories can be easier than you would think and can be done by using real butter on any food that you can think of, and spreading high-protein peanut butter on crackers, apples, bread or bagels. One of Laura's favorite high-calorie snacks is a cinnamon raisin bagel with honey nut flavored cream cheese, followed an hour later by a glass of full fat milk.

Add powdered milk or creamer to hot cocoa, milkshakes, glasses of full fat milk, hot cereals, gravy, sauces and other foods. Another option is to add whey powder to these food and beverage choices. Whey powder is a powdered protein source created as a byproduct of cheese-making and is a derivative of milk. If you are lactose intolerant, then skip whey protein powder.

Getting Extra Protein

Protein helps to build and repair the immune system as well as playing a number of other roles in the body. People with illness or after surgery need additional protein so that their body can work to heal itself. There are two sources of protein, animal- and plant-based. In a healthy person's diet, red meat is considered a no-no, however, for those who are fighting back from cancer; this is no longer a concern. If you do not want or like red meat, however, there are several other choices for protein that can be used instead.

For Laura, using a protein supplement is easier than trying to deal with eating meat, which she just cannot seem to tolerate any more. Proasis, the first all-natural protein supplement from Protica is her choice because it is small (2.9 ounces), gives her high-quality protein (25 grams) and allows her to consume it whenever she feels like it. She keeps the single-serve vial in various places so that she can consume it whenever she feels up to it. There are a number of flavors, so she can have a variety. This way, if one flavor starts making her nauseous, she can switch to a new one. She can also mix Proasis with other foods or beverages if she needs to.

She also gets protein with protein bars, not worrying about the calorie count in the choices. She has one brand that she likes the best, with a delicious chocolate peanut butter flavor. She can just grab a bar when she feels up to it, no matter where she is.

Another suggestion that has been made is for high-protein milk: Laura will mix powdered milk to whole milk and then use this high-powered blend for a number of things, including in recipes and as a beverage.
